The Delaware Coast
The Delaware coast is a long stretch of gorgeous sandy beaches and
busy little beach towns, with lively boardwalks and plenty to see and
do. The coast stretches from Lewes - a former dutch colony town, established
in the 17th century - through to Fenwick Island in the south.
Sandy beaches run for 30 odd kilometres down the Atlantic coast
in Delaware and the place is a huge draw for sun worshipers. Three of
the state parks hold 12 miles of this beach and they are quieter and
more peaceful options - a place to chill out in between the more brash
and commercialized resort beaches - packed with visitors, diners, bars,
amusements and more.
Summer or Winter?
If you`re driving in Summer, then watch out for high season tailbacks - and you may wish to drive in sandals and bathing suit to match the temperature and allow you to hop out and explore as you go. Remember to wear sunglasses with good UV protection and keep water and sodas at reach, particularly if you get caught in busy traffic. Winter is a great time to see the coast at its more peaceful - to take in its natural beauty and mix walks amongst your driving trip and you can watch the waves break along the shores and promenade without the crowds to distract you.
Picking
the right time of day
It can be well worth driving early
in the day or at night if you fancy a quieter experience - head to Bethany
Beach and Fenwick Island for small-town looks and charm. You`ll see
all kinds of shorebirds at dawn and fabulous nature too - dunes, salt
marshes and pine forests.
Get the right car
It`s important that you pick the right kind of car for your driving trip in Delaware. Car rentals abound, whether you`re looking to drive from in-state or travel further afield and sort your car hire in Washington. Aim for a model with climate control, economy fuel options, cruise control and comfort - and a model with a soft roof is wonderful when the sun`s out!
